Who we are?
The Mpumalanga Economic Development Agency is the first point of contact for entrepreneurs and investors who need access to unlocking value in Mpumalanga, the Southern African Development Community region and internationally.
Established in terms of the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency Act (Act No. 1 of 2010) and listed under schedule 3D of the Public Finance Management Act (Act No.1 of 1999, as amended by Act No. 29 of 1999), and governed by an elected Board of Directors as the Accounting Authority. MEGA was recently refocused to drive increased SMME activity within the Province and to develop a sustainable SMME sector within Mpumalanga over the long term.
The SMME sector is a key focus point for the national economy. This is especially true in our current global economic context, one that has placed massive strain on formal businesses across the world. SMMEs account for roughly half of the country’s economic activity and about 30% of South Africa’s GDP. There can be no doubting the centrality, then, of the sector to the national economy.
The agency is responsible for facilitating the economic, investment and trade promotion of the province. MEGA’s key objective is to identify market investment opportunities and to respond to requests for assistance from local entrepreneurs and foreign investors alike. MEGA’s strategy is to create an investor friendly environment.
Our mandate is, ‘to implement and promote the economic development initiatives of the Mpumalanga Provincial Government in the areas of enterprise development, investment and trade, Industrial/Commercial/Residential infrastructure development and management, agricultural development, and the provision of human settlements.
Mpumalanga Provincial Government and its economic development wing MEGA are totally committed to creating a welcoming climate for entrepreneurs and investors from all over the world.
Mpumalanga offers attractive incentives with its business friendly policies by assisting anyone wishing to share in the exciting investment opportunities available in Mpumalanga. Our chief economic policy is to provide opportunities to previously disadvantaged individuals and or communities, so as to enable economic participation of these communities – to share equitably in the resources of the country.
The government has recognized the importance of the Small, Medium, and Micro enterprises, and investment in achieving this and has introduced measures to enhance and support enterprise development, agricultural development, trade and investment promotion and industrial infrastructure development.
